Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519) 1500-19
-
Maximilian of Austria became Holy Roman Emperor in 1493. He is shown here wearing the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The portrait is inscribed 'EMPEREVR MAXIMILIAN D'AVSTRICH'.
This is probably a version after a portrait by the Master of Frankfurt (active 1490s and 1500s). The original portrait type was created when Maximilian visited the Netherlands in 1508-9. Alternatively, it may have been based on a German original, as Maximilian us known to have sent portrats to the Netherlands to be copied.Provenance
Acquired with other historical portraits in 1731 when Frederick Prince of Wales purchased the lease of Kew House from Samuel Molyneux, husband of Lady Elizabeth Capel (d. 1731).
