The Madonna della Rosa c.1540-1649
-
This is a copy of a picture by Parmigiano in Dresden, which Vasari reported was so celebrated that ‘fifty’ copies were made. This replica is of excellent quality but is now in a ruinous condition, with the upper part almost entirely destroyed. There are some changes with respect to the original; the Christ Child has a loin-cloth but no coral bracelet and the rose in his hand has been replaced by another flower.
Provenance
Possibly the paintings recorded in Charles I collection in the Adam and Eve Stairs Room at Whitehall in 1639 (no 24); sold from Somerset House for £10 to Colonel Webb on 30 October 1649 (no 22); recovered at the Restoration and listed in the 2nd Privy Lodging Room at Whitehall in 1666 (no 168)
