Workshop of Jacopo Tintoretto (1519-94)
Portrait of a Man with a Sword c.1550-99
-
The unknown sitter is depicted at half-length, facing half to the left, with his gloved left hand holding his sword and his right hand pointing downwards. He wears a black coat with grey-blue embroidered sleeves and an under-collar, the white shirt showing above and at the cuffs, and a black hat. He has a reddish beard. Thinly painted on coarse canvas, this is a vulnerable painting that is now much worn. Its poor state makes attribution difficult. Although it was once probably of good quality (the well preserved right hand is impressively drawn and painted), the head lacks the strength of Tintoretto’s own portraits and the painting of the accessories is somewhat perfunctory, suggesting that it is from Tintoretto’s workshop rather than by his own hand.
Provenance
Bears the red wax seal of the Capel family; one of a group of paintings acquired in 1731 with the lease of Kew House from Lady Elizabeth Capel by Frederick, Prince of Wales; recorded in the Privy Chamber at Kensington Palace in 1818 (no 66)
