This painting seems to be the portrait on which Pieter de Jode based the engraving which gives C. Wautier as the artist. It was presumably painted during the time spent by the Duke in Flanders from 1656 to the Restoration. It shows him as a soldier, when he was serving with the Spanish forces in the Netherlands. He and his brother were heralded for their conduct at the Battle of the Dunes on 3 June 1658.
