Count Emanuel and his family were staying with Queen Victoria in the summer of 1842. He was a General in the Austrian army, had served in the Napoleonic Wars and became Colonel-in-Chief of the Archduke Charles’ regiment of Uhlans. He married Sophie, eldest daughter of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and eldest aunt of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He was also Prince Albert’s godfather. Queen Victoria found him ‘a delightful and amiable old man’ and on his death described him as ‘our beloved & really truly dear & excellent uncle…very charming & so chivalrous’. Here he is dressed in the gala uniform of a Hungarian Cavalry General and wears the ribbon and star of the Bath. His other decorations include the stars of St Alexander Nevsky, Louis of Hesse, the Red Eagle, the White Eagle, the Hohenzollern House Order, the Family Order of Saxe-Ernest and St Anne of Russia. His badges include Maria Theresa, St George of Russia, the ‘Pour La Mérite’ of Prussia and the Kanonen Kreuz of Austria. Inscribed on the back with the names of the artist and sitter and the date, 1842
