Portrait of Victoria, Princess Royal, head and shoulders turned three-quarters to the left; wearing a white flowered evening dress, a diamond necklace and the badge of the Order of Victoria and Albert on her left shoulder This is a copy of the head and shoulders of the Princess Royal based on Winterhalter’s portrait (RCIN 404580) painted in 1857. This copy was probably a present from Princess Victoria and her new husband Prince Frederick of Prussia, to the Duchess of Kent, the Princess’s grandmother. The Princess Royal was the eldest child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and was known in the family as ‘Vicky’. Her marriage to the Crown Prince in 1858 was both a love-match and a dynastic alliance and was generally popular in Britain as it was thought to be the first occasion when an heir to the throne of Prussia had sought a bride beyond Germany. Signed and dated: Minna Pfüller / Berlin 1858.
Provenance
Presumably given to the Duchess of Kent, together with the artist's portrait of Prince Frederick William (RCIN 402475); recorded in Room no 35 at Frogmore House in 1878
