A distant view of Schloss Callenberg from the south; below, to the right of a large pine tree, a huntsman with a pack of hounds ascends the sweeping drive In the late sixteenth century Schloss Callenberg became the property of Duke Johann Casimir of Saxe-Coburg. After a period of ownership under the Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen, in 1826 the castle again became the property of the Coburg Dukes. As one of the residences of Prince Albert’s brother Duke Ernest II, it was renovated by Georg Konrad Rothbart in 1856-8. Until 1945 it served as the ducal summer residence.
