The Thames at Windsor Bridge Signed and dated 1798

John Thomas was the son and pupil of Dominic Serres (1722-93) and continued the family business of practicing and teaching marine painting and drawing. This is a view of the old wooden bridge, which crossed from Windsor to Eton on the site of the current bridge, taken from the Windsor side looking upstream. In the centre a carriage driven by four horses, possibly carrying George III, is followed by a Sovereign's Escort of Cavalry. The royal barge appears on the Thames in the foreground and to the left an unidentified contraption drawn by a horse. This image may perhaps repeat the point often made at the time, namely that the English King was a common enough part of the landscape, unlike his late French counterpart. A drawing for this painting at Eton College sates that it was painted for the Duke of Clarence (later William IV). Signed and dated: 'I. T. SERRES Pinxt 1798'
