Perdita II with her Foal Sandringham 1896
Oil on canvas | 45.5 x 61.3 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402427
-
A horse and foal standing in a paddock, facing to the right, the dark bay foal Sandringham to the left, the bay mare Perdita II in the centre, both bridled; blue sky with clouds.
Purchased by the Prince of Wales in 1888, Perdita II was a great success as a broodmare. Foaled to Hampton and Hermione in 1891, she foaled Persimmon and Diamond Jubilee, both successful racehorses and who were also immortalized by Emil Adam (see RCINs 402422, 402433). Foaled in 1896, Sandringham, however, did not share the success of his brothers. He lacked Persimmon's constitution, could not be properly trained, and so never raced. He was sold to stand as a stallion in the USA.
The frame is by Konrad Barth & Co, Munich.Provenance
Presumably commissioned by King Edward VII when Prince of Wales; first recorded at Buckingham Palace in 1909
