The name of the author of this pastel portrait is taken from the frame and is not otherwise known. The sitter married Francis, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld in 1777 and bore him ten children, including Queen Victoria's mother, the Duchess of Kent, and Prince Albert's father, Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. In this portrait of c. 1790, the Duchess is presented head and shoulders, wearing a dark green robe with fur collar over a white shirt with a lace collar. She has long curly grey hair, worn under a lace cap on top of her head.
