'Feeding the Hungry' is one of the 'Seven Acts of Mercy', a common subject in seventeenth-century painting, though usually depicting the succour of humans; the idea of this painting is that the sailor boy demonstrates his kind heart by a similar solicitude for the needs of some canine stowaways. This was the first picture the artist exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1882. Signed and dated: Frank Calderon. 1882.
