Francesco Zuccarelli (Pitigliano 1702-Florence 1788)
Landscape with Peasant Woman and Two Children Begging from a Cavalier c.1745-50
-
In an expansive, tree-covered landscape, a cavalier-figure on a horse approaches from the left. In the left foreground a woman begs surrounded by her two children. She holds out her hand to the mounted cavalier, and his two greyhounds on a linked leash approach them. In the middle distance a second mounted cavalier can be seen from behind.
This work is a pendant to Landscape with a Woman Milking a Cow and a Child Begging for Milk. The pictures are patently composed as a pair, and there is perhaps a nuance of Dutch influence in their style and subject matter. The quality of the pair is good, and they are likely to be fairly mature work, executed for Consul Smith.Provenance
Acquired in 1762 by George III from Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice (Italian List nos 174-5); recorded in the Queen’s Drawing Room at Kew in 1805 (no 13)
