  • Augusta, Duchess of Brunswick (1737-1813) was a granddaughter of George II, and elder sister of George III. In 1764 she married Charles William Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick, at the Chapel Royal, St James's Palace (see RCIN 401263). Their marriage was arranged for political purposes, and the couple regarded each other with mutual indifference. Their second daughter, Caroline of Brunswick, became the Queen consort of George IV.

The sitter is here shown head and shoulders, wearing black mourning dress, with a white scarf, and a black veil over her powdered hair, which is adorned with a small blue bow.
