Half-length portrait of James VI and I (1566-1625). He is wearing a white satin doublet decorated with large slashes, revealing a gold silk lining and a black cloak guarded with gold braid. A full wide linen ruff encircles the neck, while his black hat is decorated with a richly jewelled band and hat badge. He rests his left hand on his hip.
Provenance
First certainly recorded in the Closet at Kensington Palace in 1818 (no 611) as 'one of the Kings of Scotland'; possibly the 'Henry Stuart, King of Scotland, 2ft 5in x 1ft 11in'; listed at Hampton Court in 1666 (no 114) and thereafter
