Landscape with a Stag Hunt c.1650-99
Oil on canvas | 76.1 x 123.5 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 401196
-
The attribution of this scene is difficult, because it is a common enough type within Dutch art during the last quarter of the seventeenth century: a generalised Classical landscape enjoyed by aristocrats in modern dress. Two riders are seen here the leading one in a red jacket on a grey horse, and with a pack of hounds chasing a young stag across a river with wooded banks; a castle appears in the middle distance and mountains beyond.
Provenance
This may be the 'Landscape with a stag hunt' which was recorded in 1805 as removed to Windsor Castle from one of the 'several houses at Kew'.
