Luca Carlevarijs (Udine 1663-Venice 1730)
A Seaport with a Fountain and Ruins c. 1700-10
-
A harbour view with caprice ruins and a fountain at right, with figures resting in the foreground, horses to the left and ships beyond. The fountain is modelled on Bernini's Triton fountain in Rome. Carlevarijs moved to Venice in 1679, where he developed the Venetian view picture, influencing younger artists such as Canaletto. This picture is clearly inspired by Dutch seventeenth-century seaport scenes, and the details suggest that Carlevarijs also visited Rome.
This work had a pendant which has left the Royal Collection at some period unrecorded. It is closely related to four other caprice views by Carlevarijs in the Royal Collection, which were probably painted in the same period.Provenance
Acquired in 1762 by George III from Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice (Italian List nos 256); recorded in the Queen's Drawing Room at Kew in 1805 (no 23)
