View of Castel Gandolfo c.1650-1750
-
In the right foreground of the picture two men and a dog stand beneath tall trees on a plateau beside Lake Nemi. Beyond, in the middle distance, the town of Castel Gandolfo can be seen on a high plateau.
This is probably the 'Castel Gandolphe, Francesco Bolognese pinx.' seen by Vertue in the collection of Frederick, Prince of Wales, in July 1750 (B. L. Add. MS. 19027, fol. 20v). It is conceivable though less likely that is is the copy by Joseph Goupy of a 'Poussin View of Castelgandolfo' (posthumous sale of Joseph Goupy, London, 3 April 1770, lot. 73). The painting is attributed to Francesco Bolognese when it appears at Buckingham Palace in 1790. Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi, called 'Il Bolognese' (1606-1680) painted landscapes in the manner of Annibale Carracci, long after his death. This is not an unreasonable attribution, though this landscape looks more like a follower of Gaspar Dughet.Provenance
Probably acquired by Frederick, Prince of Wales; recorded in the King's Dressing-Room at Buckingham Palace in 1790; taken from there to Windsor Castle in 1805 and in the Council Room at Windsor in 1816
