St Paul before Agrippa 1700-50
Oil on canvas | 76.5 x 114.2 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 401043
-
A classical interior with figures grouped around a table, a central male figure in a red toga, with a view through arches to mountains beyond, with a Roman sentinel in the doorway to the left.
The first record of this painting in the Collection (in 1870) describes it as 'a very poor work'. It would seem to date from the early 18th Century in England when artists were seeking to absorb the lesson of Raphael's tapestry cartoons.Provenance
First recorded at Kew Palace in 1870
