Lawrence was the most fashionable and also the greatest portraitist of his generation. He was made Principal Painter to George III in 1792 after Reynolds’s death, and received occasional commissions; however it was only after 1814 that George IV began to employ him in earnest. This portrait was painted for George III or Queen Charlotte at a cost of 15 guineas; it was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1790. Early prints of the portrait reveal that it was originally painted on a rectangular canvas; the corners were cut down into the present oval formal at some later date. The Princess holds a pink rosebud in her hand, the rosebush under her elbow; wearing a white dress with blue sash, long blond curly hair.
