The Recruit c.1835
-
The painting depicts a countryman seated at a table outside a public house playing cards with a soldier. A carter stands behind the table. All three look towards an armless Chelsea pensioner and a legless Greenwich pensioner who were presumably wounded in the Napoleonic wars. Over the doors of the public house are the initials G III R, for King George III.
