Hare c. 1907
Chalcedony, rose diamonds | 1.5 x 3.5 x 1.5 cm (whole object) | RCIN 40092
-
A crouching hare carved in white chalcedony with rose cut diamond eyes. Translating the typical characteristics of an animal into hardstone to achieve the most realistic representation was usually the primary concern of Fabergé's sculptors, and it explains why his animals have both freshness and enduring charm. Although previously recorded as a rabbit, this particular carving has more the proportion of a hare. In total there are nineteen rabbits and two hares in the Royal Collection.
