The painting depicts a corner of the terrace at Osborne on the Isle of Wight, looking down to the sea and across to the English coast. Becker was at Osborne in July 1869 and the Queen reported that he was ‘doing some charming things here’. Signed and dated: August Becker 1870. On the frame the date of the picture is given as August 1869.
