Prince Ernest (1868-1937) is wearing Royal Stewart tartan. His mother was Queen Victoria’s daughter Alice and his father Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse. The family was in England at the end of 1871. Queen Victoria noted that Sant had painted a ‘most lovely head of little Ernie’ partly from a photograph. Inscribed on the back with the name of the sitter.
