Charles Burton Barber (1845-94)
Myriads Blow Together Signed and dated 1881
-
A spring landscape of a wooded hillside covered with daffodils, with bluebells in the foreground; a path crosses the scene diagonally from the foreground right.
The title was possibly taken by Barber from Tennyson’s poem ‘Maud’, Part 1, section XII, of 1855:
Where was Maud? in our wood;
And I, who else, was with her,
Gathering woodland lilies,
Myriads blow together.
First recorded in Windsor in 1883, this painting bears the Personal Property stamp of Queen Victoria on the reverse, so presumably was acquired by her. It was possibly one of pictures included in payment to the artist of £113.17 of June 17, 1881.
Charles Burton Barber was employed by Queen Victoria from 1871 to 1894 and numerous small paintings, often of royal dogs, survive in the Royal Collection.Provenance
Presumably acquired by Queen Victoria; first recorded at Windsor in 1883
