View of Belluno c.1720
Goauche on leather | 30.5 x 45.7 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 400556
-
The city of Belluno is seen at the left, approximately from the south, with mountains rising behind. Belluno sits at the confluence of the rivers Ardo and Piave, which are seen at the right. In the left foreground labourers work outside a thatched barn before a house; in the right foreground a woman, child and a seated man appear to take in the view.
Belluno was Marco Ricci's birthplace and was pictured several times by the artist. There are two related drawings in the Royal Collection, one of which provides a more detailed view than here (RCIN 991151). What seems to be a large-scale picture of Belluno - or somewhere loosely based on the setting of the city - appears hanging in the background of one version of Marco Ricci's 'Opera-Rehearsal'.Provenance
Acquired from the artist (or after his death) by Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice; acquired from Smith by George III in 1762 (Italian List nos 116-48); recorded in the Queen's Dressing Room at Kew in 1805 and 1828
