The models of bulldogs are of a type repeated by Fabergé's craftsmen and were therefore obviously popular with his clientele. The translucent, pale green bowenite is combined with rubies or olivines for eyes and gem-set gold collars that also bear tags with various inscriptions, here 'I Prix' in French. They are clearly not portrait models, but numerous examples were purchased at this time from the London branch. There are seven bulldogs in various hardstones - including bowenite, nephrite and obsidian - in the Royal Collection, many of which are very similar in size, style and pose.
