Fabergé
Elephant c. 1900
Chalcedony, diamond | 4.5 x 6.2 x 3.0 cm (whole object) | RCIN 40044
-
A small grey elephant of chalcedony, with rose diamond eyes.
Elephants were one of Fabergé’s most popular animal hardstone carvings and there are many examples in the Royal Collection amassed by successive generations from Queen Alexandra to Queen Elizabeth. This elephant demonstrates the keen observation of the modellers and the extraordinary skill of the lapidaries. The sense of the weight and bulk of the elephant and his slack, wrinkled skin as he walks along is palpable even on this diminutive scale.
