Belcamp was a Dutch artist who worked for Charles I as painter and curator from c. 1624 until his death. This is one of three full-length historical portraits of English royalty commissioned by Charles I in the 1630s (the others being RCIN 404037 and 404044). The purpose and original location of this portrait is not known.
Edward IV, King of England between 1461 and 1483, is here depicted wearing a fur-lined gown with the regalia on the table behind him. The canvas has been enlarged on all sides.Provenance
Commissioned by Charles I; sold for £15 to Hunt and Bass on 1 March 1653 from the Armory at St James's Palace (no 5); recovered at the Restoration and listed in the Queen's Gallery at Hampton Court in 1666 (no 25)
