This is a version of the state portrait at Versailles, dated 1789. The King is shown full-length, standing on a dias, in Coronation Robes embroidered with fleur de lys, resting his right hand on his sceptre, while the crown and sceptre with the Hand of Justice rests on the cushion beside. He holds his plumed hat in his left hand and wears the sword of Charlemagne. Behind him is a gilded throne chair carved with a figure of Justice.
Provenance
Acquired by George IV in 1811; Benjamin Jutsham records its delivery to Carlton House in 4 February 1812 in a gilt frame with two shields ornamented with trophies and two ornaments representing Roman fasces.
