William III (1650-1702) when a Child c.1657
-
This portrait of the young William III is probably a studio version based on a three-quarter length original signed and dated 1657 at Knole. Aged around seven years old the sitter has not yet been breeched into adult clothes, so wears the skirted outfit of a young boy. The future monarch stands beside a table, wearing a full length gown of yellow satin. Its sleeves are paned and reveal his billowing white linen shift beneath and there are additional narrow sham hanging sleeves behind, which for children at this date were longer than those for adults. The falling band (collar) is edged with fine lace which matches the turn back cuffs. He also wears a sash with the order of the Garter.
Provenance
Stated to have been purchased in Holland by Graves and acquired from him by Queen Victoria in 1858; recorded on the Landing of the Visitors' Stairs at Windsor Castle in 1859
