-
St Michael’s Mount, off the coast of Cornwall, has been a historic port for trading ships, the site of a Benedictine monastery, and a fortress. In 1588 it was here that the first beacon was lit to warn of the approach of the Spanish Armada. The royal yacht, the Victoria and Albert, anchored in Mount’s Bay on 5 September 1846 and can be seen on the right of the painting. In the distance on the far right is the Cornish coast.
Inscribed on the back with the name of the artist, the title and the date, September 1846.Provenance
Given to Prince Albert by Queen Victoria 24th December 1846; recorded hanging in the Prince Consort's apartments (Room no 208) at Windsor Castle in 1878
