A hard-paste standing figure of Augustus the Strong, holding a scroll in his right hand. He is standing with his left hand is on his hip, his weight on his right leg and his left leg forward. He is dressed in a white wig topped with a gold laurel wreath, gilt armour and a large white cloak. The base has white, gold and green decoration.
Augustus the Stong was Elector of Saxony and is credited with the founding of the Meissen factory. His desire to emulate the porcelain of China resulted in the discovery of kaolin by Johann Friedrich Böttger, the compound needed to make hard paste porcelain. Meissen became the leading porcelain manufacturer in Europe during the first half of the eighteenth century.
This piece is attributed to Johann Friedrich Böttger, the main craftsman at the factory in its early years. He is thought to have modelled the original from which the version is taken. Many other versions of this figure were produced. -
