Cleopatra c.1610-36
Bronze | 170 cm (Height) (whole object) | RCIN 39714
-
A bronze sculpture of a naked, life-size figure of Cleopatra, in a contraposto pose, with her weight on her straight, right leg, the left knee slightly flexed and the left heel raised. Her head is turned slightly to the right, and tilted upwards, and hair parted at the front. Her left arm is crossed over her waist and in her left hand she is holding an asp which is uncoiling as it bites her left breast. Her long right arm falls on her side, holding some drapery with her hand which falls over a baluster-shaped urn decorated with ribbon swags and acanthus leaves.
This staute of Cleopatra is probably the one made by Le Sueur for Charles I for which he was paid £200 on 7th May 1636. It is not made after an antique protoptype but more likely a copy of a Florentine marble statue made in the late 16th century.Provenance
Le Sueur Invoice for £200, dated May 1636. Made for Charles I, possibly at Greenwich Palace. Sold in 1651 to Nicholas Stone. In the Privy Garden at Hampton Court by 1659. Recorded at Whitehall, Treasury Building in 1931. At Hampton Court by 1980's.
