A Balinese carved wooden statuette of the Hindu deity Vishnu, riding upon the shoulders of the mythological bird Garuda, the tail of which forms a canopy over both, on a carved oval base. The statuette is made from ebony wood from the island of Sulawesi (formerly Celebes).
The Garuda bird is the national emblem of Indonesia.Provenance
Exhibited at the 1970 Royal Easter Show in Sydney, Australia in the Panorama of the Pacific section which marked Captain Cook's landing in Australia. Presented to Queen Elizabeth II by the Indonesian Ambassador to Australia on her visit to Australia, 1970.
