An oval Tassie medallion of Empress Catherine II, the Great, of Russia, facing to the right, wearing a helmet; in a plain gilt metal frame with ribbon-tied cresting.
Provenance
Purchased by Queen Mary at the sale of the Collection of Mr. George William Bosworth (1865-1946), formerly Manager and secretary of the Buxton Hydro Hotel, Derbyshire, at Sotheby's, 25/11/1947, Lot 32. Bosworth retired to Douglas on the Isle of Man.
From a drawing of the Empress Catherine by Empress Maria Feodorovna in 1780, who later became the former's daughter-in-law. That drawing later issued as a stipple engraving by James Walker.
No 70 in John Miller Grey, James and William Tassie. -
