A rectangular shagreen box, with silver mounts and silver-gilt interior; the lid inset with an ancient Greek coin showing Zeus seated, with staff and eagle (Zeus aetophoros). The reverse of the coin shows a profile of Hercules, wearing the lion’s pelt and is surrounded by a presentation inscription: 'From C. Knollys. Athens 9th Nov. 1889.'
The coin is associated with Alexander III ‘the Great’ and dates from the 4th century BC.
The box was a gift from Charlotte Knollys, Lady of the Bedchamber and private secretary to Queen Alexandra.Provenance
A gift from Charlotte Knollys to Edward VII when Prince of Wales, on his birthday, 9 November 1889.
