A sword or dao with a flat, tapering, steel blade, slightly curved, with the cutting edge on the inner side, and an iron hilt, guarded at the horn pommel and decorated with a tuft of red-dyed goat-hair. Open wooden scabbard with a shoulder-belt attachment of cotton-covered leather with cowrie-shell decoration. These types of swords are usually associated with peoples of Nagaland, on the borders of Assam, Burma and India.
Provenance
Presented to King Edward VII, when Prince of Wales, during his tour of India in 1875-76 by Virachandra Manikya, Maharaja of Hill Tipperah.
