Rectangular snuff box, with hinged lid, formed from six lapis lazuli panels with gold-mounted borders and Ionic pilasters at each corner. Gold thumbpiece with chased foliate decoration and a monogram, surmounted by crown.
Provenance
Presented by the Empress Marie Alexandrovna, 11 January 1858, to George, Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Purchased by Queen Mary at Christies, 27 July 1923, lot 16 (sale of Carl Michael, Duke of Mecklenburg's 'Old French snuff boxes'), and presented to King George V as a Christmas gift, 1923. -
