An axe knife or bhuj with a knife-shaped steel blade chased with floral decoration and with an elephant-head hafting. The steel shaft overlaid with gold. A percussion pistol of steel overlaid with gold attached to the blade and haft.
This type of axe (bhuj) is named after the capital of Cutch, a Princely state in north-west India, where this type of weapon is thought to have originated. In the nineteenth century, traditional weapons such as this example were adapted with the addition of pistols to make combination weapons. These adaptations were not always practical and instead were a display of the craftsman's skill.Provenance
Presented to King Edward VII, when Prince of Wales, during his tour of India in 1875-76 by Gambhirsinhji Verisalji, Raja of Rajpipla.
