A gauntlet sword or pata with a straight, double-edged, steel blade strengthened on each side by two ornamental plates fastened with rivets; sheet brass gauntlet-hilt hammered with a man's face suspending a pair of arms. Swords of this type were fashioned with a variety of gauntlets that ranged from stylised elephant and tiger heads. This curious example was illustrated in the Illustrated London News when the Prince of Wales's gifts were exhibited at the South Kensington Museum in June 1876.
