Mace seventeenth century
Steel and gold | 58.0 x 8.7 x 8.7 cm (whole object) | RCIN 37528
-
A mace or shashpar or gurz made of blued steel finely decorated in gold. Although presented by Mahbub Ali Khan, Asaf Jah VI Nizam of Hyderabad (south India), the style of gold decoration suggests that this mace was made in north India. Arms and Armour at Sandringham (1910) records that the mace is Mughal, which the Asaf Jah dynasty had historically served as governors until 1724.
Provenance
Presented to King Edward VII, when Prince of Wales, during his tour of India in 1875-76 by Mahbub Ali Khan, Nizam of Hyderabad.
