-
An elephant goad or ankus made of steel decoratated with kuftkari (overlaid gold) patterning of vines and leaves. The goad has two spikes - one of which is straight and the other which resembles a curved hook and terminates in a bird's head.
The decoration of this ankus suggests that it was made of ceremonial use, where elephants played an important role during both royal and religious processions and ceremonies.Provenance
Presented to King Edward VII, when Prince of Wales, during his tour of India in 1875-76.
