Sword eighteenth century
Steel, gold, wood, leather and silver | 102.8 x 10.5 x 3.0 cm (whole object) | RCIN 37515
-
A sword with a straight steel blade, possibly European, and punched with three holes. The blade is of unusual flexibility, which apparently allows the sword to be worn as a belt. The guarded hilt has a flat circular pommel overlaid in gold. The leather-covered scabbard has a silver chape, with an attached side sheath containing a dagger.
Provenance
Presented to Edward VII, when Prince of Wales, during his tour of India in 1875-76 by Kathamma Nachiyar, Rani of Sivaganga. The sword reputedly belonged to the Poligar (chieftain) Veerapandiya Kattabomman of Tinnevelli. Kattabomman opposed British East India Company rule but was defeated by the Company in 1799.
