This set of five polychrome wax half-length portraits depicts sovereigns and important figures of the Tudor period. Mary, Queen of Scots, Cardinal Wolsey, Henry VIII, Thomas More and Edward VI, are shown in high-relief and facing the viewer. They were made Samuel Percy, a successful and prolific wax modeller of the late 18th century and early 19th century. Wax portraits became fashionable in the 18th century and they were an attractive adornment for private cabinets. These portraits are set on a green backed glass with individual moulded circular glazed frames of ebonised wood, and are countersunk in upright rectangular panels of oak with gilded surface and grooved gilt borders.
