Thomas Engleheart (1745-1809?)
George III (1738-1820) late eighteenth century
-
This ivory-coloured wax head and shoulder portrait is one in a pair depicting King George III and his consort Queen Charlotte made by the artist Thomas Engleheart. King George III is shown with his head in profile facing to the left, wearing classical dress with a fringed shawl on top and with his hair tied with a ribbon. The wax portrait is set on a green glass ground with an oval gilt wood frame with cavetto moulding. Wax portraits became fashionable in the 18th century and they were an ideal adornment in gentlemen's cabinets of the period. Thomas Engleheart was an English modeller and carver of German descent. He was admitted to the Royal Academy Schools in 1769, winning the gold medal in 1772 with a bas-relief of 'Ulysses and Nausicaa', for which he was in competition with the artist John Flaxman. His wax portraits of King George III and Queen Charlotte are both in the Royal Collection.
