This terracotta figure of Thomas Carlyle, the Scottish historian, philosopher and essayist, is a reduction of the large bronze monument by Boehm, placed at Chelsea Embankement and unveiled in 1882.
Carlyle is shown seated in an open armchair, wearing a long coat and gazing pensively to the left with his crossed hands resting on his legs.
Carlyle was connected with the transatlantic slave trade and supported it politically.Provenance
