-
This parian porcelain figure Princess Victoria when a child, representing Summer, was commissioned by Prince Albert in 1846 to the sculptor Mary Thornycroft. Intended for Osborne House, the statue was one in a series that depicted four of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's children as allegories of the 'Seasons' and it was presented to Queen Victoria on 26th August 1847. Princess Victoria, the Princess Royal, is depicted half-seated on a tree stumo, wearing loose classical robes and half-seated on a tree stump, and holding a wreath of flowers and a sheaf of corn in her left hand.
Provenance
The marble group of four figures was exhibited at the 1851 Great Exhibition in London. Queen Victoria was very fond of these sculptures and ordered copies in bronze and several reductions in parian ware, as here. The original marble given to Queen Victoria by Prince Albert, on his birthday, 26th August 1847.
