Cuvette à masques 1757-58
-
The gondola-shaped vase, decorated with an apple-green ground, broadly resembles a boat-shaped vase. Despite the visual appeal of the cuvette à masques, comparatively few were made; production seems to have been limited to the years 1755-62.
One of the distinctive features of the decoration is the elaborately tooled, imaginative gilding encircling the two reserves. The vignette-like representation of a stag being pursued through a forest glade by hounds and mounted huntsmen is framed by elaborate gold floral trails and trellis panels supporting birds. The painter Mutel (active 1754-9, 1765, 1771-4), who was responsible for the hunting scene, was a former decorator of fans and later specialised in landscape painting at Sèvres. The strong cool colours, in tones of olive green, brown and wispy blue-grey, are typical of his hand.

Delivered to Carlton House on 8 November 1817 (‘A Seve Porcelaine Vase Green Ground. Boat Shape. in Mr Benois Room'), it was probably purchased for George IV by François Benois in Paris in October 1817 from the dealer Pierre-Joseph-Ignace Lafontaine at a cost of 2,500 francs. The entry in Lafontaine’s bill reads ‘1 Grand Vase de Sevre fond Verd en forme de vaisseau’. Listed in 1826 under No.122 in the Confectionary at Carlton House as ‘An Oval shaped green and gold Vase of Seve Porcelain, with Chimera, Mask handles and four scroll feet, the front painted in Landscape and the back in flowers and fruit – 13 ½ In. by 7. In on the top’.
