Hard paste Paris porcelain sugar bowl and cover (part of a déjeuner). Upright oval shape with a cone-like cover and handles in the shape of partly gilded polychrome bird-headed winged serpents. The knob is formed by two gilded masks placed back to back.
Provenance
Acquired by George IV. Recorded in 1826 in the Confectionary, Carlton House: ‘No. 161. A Dejeuni of Modern French China in Crimson, green and gold, with Egyptian ornaments, Consisting of an Octagonal Plateau, 4 Cups and Saucers, Sugar Bason and Cover. Teapot, Cream Ewer, two Egg Cups, and a double salt’.
