A pair of patinated bronze horses, each rearing on hind legs, the first with its head facing right, the second, facing left. Set on rectangular bases and standing on ebonised wood plinths. Probably cast in France, these statuettes are versions of the horses in the 'Horse Tamers' monumental group in the Piazza del Quirinale in Rome. The originals themselves are thought to be Roman copies of Greek statues from the fourth century BC.
